The Biggest Load food drive kicks off
by Jim De Long
Cleveland-What can you and four other people do to make a big impact on others?
In the past few years you and others have generated a great amount for those in need through the Biggest Load food drive competition.
With community support, we have generated $22,000 to provide over 13,500 lbs of frozen turkeys, approx three tons of canned goods and non-perishables and about 10,000 lbs in fresh produce. This all helped in the Turkey Tuesday program for the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland.
All of this helped to provide at least one good holiday meal for 1,350 households in greater Cleveland
We could use some help. You and four others can form a food drive team. Your organization, school group, sports group or church would all make a good team. Please

The purpose of this contest is to help increase the poundage of food in the food banks and ease the burden of providing
food and services to those in need. The president says that one out of ten people have a problem with hunger. With all the state and federal cuts, the need is even greater in our community.
This contest will be applied to the Taskforce's Turkey Tuesday. Any remainder will be rolled over into the Jon Brittain Food Drive in Cleveland, while food gathered from other areas will go to their locally recognized food pantry.
Teams can be made up of any five members of a leather club, social club, sports team, civic org, or any five employees of a bar. Enter as many five member teams as you want. For example, Cocktails Cleveland and Cocktails Akron, or Man's World and the Shed.
Each team will select a team captain. The captain will be the contact person and also be responsible for entering the team. Each team will enter their combined team weight, simply adding all the weights of the team together. This will be the standard to meet or beat for each team.
The criteria is pounds. The most needed items are canned goods, dry goods, peanut butter, etc. No frozen, refrigerated or fresh items. No cash will be accepted in this drive. Each team will be responsible, if needed, to convert all cash to poundage of food.
The team collecting the highest percentage of their team's weight, or exceeding it, will be the winners.
Each team or captain will be responsible for the delivery of the poundage received. A panel will be selected to receive, weigh, and log all teams' entries. Weights will be taken the week of October 29, and weigh-in for the Cleveland area will be at the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, 3210 Euclid Ave.
The winner will be announced at the November 5 CLAW Nation Leather Dance, which will feature a very special guest.
Please send in your team name (club or bar), team captain contact information, and the team's combined weight to ✓
